In addition to the statutory Immediate Life Support (ILS) training undertaken by research nurses within the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, the NIHR Exeter CRF provides bespoke Emergency Simulation Training (EST) for nurses and doctors working within the Research and Development directorate.
Emergency scenario training is provided in order to:
- enhance research participants’ safety
- expose staff to clinical emergency situations relevant to their work
- enable staff to gain and maintain confidence in dealing with an emergency in a safe and supportive training environment
- ensure staff are competent in recognising deterioration in a participant’s condition and initiate appropriate and timely action.
We work closely with the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (Exeter) Resuscitation Team and use advanced simulation mannequins to ensure the experience is as realistic as possible. A small group of 6-8 healthcare professionals are involved in this training at any one time, supported by 3 facilitators. Training is filmed and discussion / feedback is an important aspect of the training. Unannounced emergency scenarios are also conducted within the CRF to provide additional ‘onsite’ training.
